Terms used on INZU

As some of the terminology used can be confusing this page explains some of the jargon used.

CMS

CMS or content management system refers to a set of tools that allows a person with limited technical knowledge to update their website without the need to involve a programmer or web designer.

There are many types of CMS, all with different capabilities and tasks in mind. The CMS behind INZU is designed specifically for small businesses, medium businesses, charities, organisations, bloggers and musicians.

Cloud

Cloud refers to cloud computing which, while not a new way of computing, is where changes to internet based services are occurring. Essentially cloud computing is a centralised service that is accessible from multiple usage points.

The advantage of this is that software or data does not have to be installed on hardware at the point of use. It is instead accessed on demand.

All websites are already a form of cloud computing; INZU goes a step beyond this and puts two essential parts of website creation into the cloud, those being the content management system (CMS) and data/media.

Instead of your website having an installed CMS and the data/media of your site hosted on it, it is instead hosted by INZU, with your site connecting to INZU when data/media is required by a visitor and you making changes to your website by logging into your INZU account.

E-commerce

Most people understand the concept of e-commerce in that it facilitates purchases over the internet.

However when it comes to setting up an e-commerce site it become a lot more complicated than that.

If you were to set up your own site to take credit card payments you would need the following; A merchant bank account, business bank account, payment processor account, secure SSL certificate, PCI compliance certification and 3D secure.

All these accounts and certificates are costly and time consuming to set up, but by using INZU all you need is a valid debit/credit card as INZU handles the payment processing. You simply withdraw funds as and when you need to. Paypal is also integrated into INZU meaning many more customer will be able to buy from you store.

API

API stands for Application Programming Interface. To understand this in the context of INZU, it should first be understood that INZU is a web application. Not all websites are applications; websites that are applications are usually defined by the users' ability to have their own account on the site with the ability to change files and data associated with their account.

What an API does is to allow access to user data from outside the site, so instead of your user data only appearing on www.inzu.net, with an API the data is made accessible to other domains such as your own website.

While this may sound the same as the Cloud, the Cloud is a description of the service architecture, but an API is the actual interface which makes the cloud based communication possible.

JSON

JSON put simply is a data format. It allows data to be sent between two computer applications in a way that both applications are able to read, and more importantly, to use specific sections of data from the data sent.

Data can be sent between computer applications in many different ways and formats but JSON is used by INZU for a few of its particular advantages:

  • It is lightweight, meaning data transfer is quick. This is very important for mobile communication
  • It is widely adopted, ensuring a wide variety of applications and devices can easily read the data
  • It is easy to understand, requiring little data sanitisation and is also easily human-readable

XML

XML is also a data format. It allows data to be sent between two computer applications. It is a widely adopted format and has been used by many website applications over the years, meaning documentation, tutorials and example code are easily found regarding its implementation.

With its HTML style it may be easier for beginners to understand but it is not as lightweight as JSON and in some cases more difficult to integrate with other applications.

Merchant account

A merchant account is a special type of bank account that allows you to receive credit card payments. They can be costly to set up, take time and are subject to bank approval. There are also ongoing subscription costs to be paid. To take credit card payments on your own site you must have a merchant account.

By using INZU you do not need to go through this hassle and expense as card payments are instead processed by INZU.

PCI Compliance

Another issue with taking card payments yourself is PCI compliance. This requires your site to be independently audited by a third party company to ensure your server and site is reaching PCI-compliant standards of security. This again adds costs and hassle for you and your business.

SSL Certificate

An SSL Certificate is required to transfer information between a users browser and the site they are browsing securely. SSL Certificates are used to protect your card information when making a transaction and your login details when logging in.

3D Secure

A further security measure introduced by banks is 3D secure. This system is designed to cut online fraud by introducing password protection to your card when buying online. The password is stored and verified by your card issuer and by confirming the user is genuine the card issuer takes responsibility for the purchase being genuinely made by the card holder.

3D secure can be difficult and costly to implement and not doing so can result in fines.

Domain name

A domain name is a web address e.g. www.inzu.net. You will need your own domain name to create an INZU Cloud site. If you are going to create a 'My INZU' page no domain name is required.

Hosting

Hosting refers to space on a server where your website files are located. Hosting is only required if you are creating an INZU cloud site. Unlike a normal website, much of your site's media and data are hosted with INZU so the hosting requirement for your site is very low; usually 10MB would be enough, but even the most basic web hosting package will give you hundreds of megabytes of storage space.
